Reflections of a Multiple Near-Death Experiencer:

Purification of the Heart -  5 Stages on the Spiritual Path

By Dr. Yvonne Kason MD, Med, CCFP, FCFP, MGPP (retired)

During more than 25 years counseling patients with spiritual experiences, Dr. Yvonne Kason noticed that there are definite psycho-spiritual stages on the spiritual path.  “Purification of the Heart” is a multifaith model for these stages, based on the writings of Swami Sri Yukteswar, - The Holy Science, written in 1894.  These consecutive stages are:  the Dark Heart, the Propelled Heart, the Steady Heart, the Devoted Heart and the Clean Heart.  Dr. Kason will describe the focus and tasks of each stage. Using her own life as a case example, she will describe her 4 Near-Death Experiences and a “calling” mystical experience and show how they each heralded her own transition to the next stage of the heart.    She concludes that the long-term goal of every spiritual seeker, no matter what religious tradition they are following, is to purify the heart, to reach the clean-heart stage, where they can experience deep and ongoing personal communion with God, and can clearly manifest Spiritual Light on the planet.

Yvonne Kason MD was the Co-Founder of  the Spirituality in Health-Care Network in 2000, which she also Co-Chaired with Dr. John Thornton  from 2000 to 2004.   Retired as a family physician and transpersonal psychotherapist in Toronto in 2006, she was as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto. She was also  a founder of the Kundalini Research Network, and the founder of the Spiritual Emergence Research and Referral Clinic. She is a recognized international expert and one of Canada‘s foremost authorities on near-death and other spiritual experiences. Author or co-author of three books, Dr.  Kason  has been on numerous television and radio shows across
Canada and the U.S.

Yvonne Kason MD . Farther Shores: Exploring How Near Death, Kundalini and Mystical Experiences Can Transform Ordinary Lives. iUniverse, 2008.    www.farthershores.com

This inspirational book describes the moving story of how a 1979 airplane crash transformed author Dr. Yvonne Kason’s life forever. Her profound near-death experience launched her on a quest as a medical doctor, to research spiritual experiences that can transform our everyday lives.  This new publication of Farther Shores is a synthesis of 25 years of Dr. Kason’s research, personal experiences and the experiences of the thousands of patients she has counseled. She has helped others understand and integrate their extraordinary states of consciousness and the long-term spiritual transformation that often follows. Written from a multi-faith perspective, the book draws deeply from yoga and Christian mystical traditions, along with modern medicine, psychiatry and psychology.

Topics include:

  • Mystical experiences - a multifaith perspective
  • Near Death Experiences
  • NDE-like experiences: Facing-death, death-bed, and death-watch experiences
  • Kundalini awakening / spiritual energy episodes / yogic model of consciousness
  • Psychic awakenings including Past-Life Recall
  • Spiritual Emergencies and Psychosis
  • Grounding strategies
  • Long-term spiritual transformation of consciousness/ the mystical path: physical, psychological and spiritual symptoms
  • Promoting a balanced Spiritual Transformation / Self-realization / God-realization

Filled with inspiring case stories, Farther Shores is a practical guide, offering  insight and support. Kason offers sound advice and practical suggestions on how to use these extraordinary occurrences for spiritual deepening and personal growth, and discusses the importance of "psycho-spiritual housecleaning".   Kason concludes that all types of spiritual experiences lead to the same conclusion, the same one truth: That we are all spiritual beings having a physical worldly experience; that we are all loved by a Higher Power, omnipresent loving force, or God; and that all true religions are leading us to this one same truth, albeit by slightly different paths.
